This historical article has its background in an ongoing project of Dan Person and T B E, with the ambition to present thorough, well-documented Borzoi History from as many countries as possible. For Norway he works with Laila Kr\u00f8t\u00f8e, Dagfinn Lervik and Arvid Andersen and hope for more people from Norway (Borzoiutvalget)? will take part and make it a long-lasting document to be used in the future.<\/p>\n

Borzois existed in Norway already around 1900 but without any offspring. However there is a line from the first imports from the\u00a0Ramsden<\/a>\u00a0kennels in England early 1900, to the very successful breeders in Norway today, more than hundred years later. In this work, we will try to show how dedicated people in Norway have managed to maintain a healthy line of borzoi. It\u2019s not straight way, it windles through Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland before reaching the rest of the world. Current Norwegian breeders have mostly leaned towards Swedish, Finnish Continental & US lines.<\/p>\n

It is a common believe that borzoi in Norway began with the import of the Ramsden dogs born in 1910. This is perhaps not the whole truth, as can be seen in the picture from 1901. Would have been interesting to know where this photo was taken.<\/p>\n

An interesting report from a show in Kristiania (Oslo) in 1915 has been found. The Borzois are, from left,\u00a0Iwan von Kurfurstenstein<\/a>\u00a0(breeder Christoph Otto ) and Hiroh, on the right Ch\u00a0Ramsden Romance<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Ramsden Reindeer<\/a>. The judge writes very positively about the Borzoi and says that Romance is BOB and Ivan was best male. Unfortunately, there are no signs of either Ivan or Hiroh in today\u2019s pedigrees. That is not the case with Romance and Reindeer. They are among the foundations of Scandinavian Borzoi. There are some different descriptions of how the two Ramsden Borzois came to Norway. It is worth remembering that dogs changed owners, much more frequently then. This is what we believe happened.<\/p>\n

The young Miss Erika Bugge living in Mandal, south of Norway, imported Ramsden Romance and Ramsden Reindeer from Borman\u2019s famous english kennel Ramsden. Ms Bugge had help from\u00a0Lord Salvesen<\/a>, an English lord, with roots in Mandal,\u00a0 and also from the Knudtzon family of the\u00a0av Ulleberg<\/a>\u00a0kennel in Larvik. The two dogs came, via Mrs Anker Iversen in Kristiansand to Ulleberg to be bred from. Romance remained there, while Reindeer went back to Mandal with Miss Bugge. He was later owned by Dr Roscher also in Mandal. There is a story about Reindeer, told by a youngster from that time:\u00a0\u201cThere was this huge dog who was let out loose on the street. It walked from the doctor\u2019s house to the nearby slaughter to get a bone. All the kids feared it, it could easily outrun them\u201d.<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kennel af Ulleberg<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n

Ch Ramsden Romance and Reindeer were bred and had the first (and only?) Borzoi litter at \u201cUlleberg\u201d and Vanja af Ulleberg was one of four puppies.One of the male pups, Boris av Ulleberg, went to Denmark, but has no registered offspring.<\/p>\n

It was the daughter,\u00a0Marie Knudtzon<\/a>, that was the driving force in the kennel. She promoted her Borzois all over Scandinavia. However, with the start of World War I, she parted with her Borzois and instead took a fancy in Whippets and Miniature Breeds.\u00a0Ramsden Romance did not stay on Ulleberg. Both she and the daughter\u00a0Vanja af Ulleberg<\/a>, were sold to Sweden, and took their part of Swedish History. However, Marie Knudtzon became a very popular judge of Borzois, and as such influenced the breed in all Scandinavian Countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Frimodt\u2019s<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n

Borzoi breeding paused for a while after the Knudtzon family turned to other breeds in about 1915. It was not until 1938 that\u00a0Frithjof Aamodt<\/a>\u00a0imported a borzoi from Denmark,\u00a0<\/span>Finis Nacha Brusilovice<\/a>\u00a0but didn\u2019t\u00a0<\/span>do any continuous breeding. Frithjof Aamodt lived in what was then a little village, Str\u00f8mmen, not far from Oslo.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the beginning of 1950s Mr Aamodt imported two littermates from Denmark, Fyrwalds Jaroslaw\u00a0 & Fyrwalds Pawlova and had his kennel name, Frimodt\u2019s registered. He did breed this two to produce, among else\u00a0Frimodts Maslova<\/a>. She went back to Denmark to produce a litter for kennel Lillemark. Later Mr Aamodt imported a bitch,\u00a0Boreland\u2019s Carissima<\/a>\u00a0from Sweden<\/span>. He mated her to Ch\u00a0Ekhaga Nikolai.<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>This breeding\u00a0<\/span>gave the excellent black\/white Ch.\u00a0<\/span>Frimodt\u2019s Sarasch.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Carissima was bred again, this time to Int. Ch.\u00a0Tichij Don Igor\u00a0<\/a><\/span>and from this breeding came the outstanding Int. Ch.\u00a0Frimodt\u2019s Frappant<\/a>, \u201cFrippe\u201d went as studfee to\u00a0Marie-Louise Wallner<\/a>, owner of Igor. He was promoted by her, and became, together with her English import,\u00a0Chinnor Kerstin<\/a>\u00a0the foundation for Mrs Wallner\u2019s\u00a0Igorof kennel.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cFrippe\u201d became perhaps the most influential borzoi of his time, as both he and his offspring became widely used in the Scandinavian countries. You will find very few Scandinavian borzois that dont have \u201cFrippe\u201d somewhere in the pedigree.<\/span><\/p>\n

Until 1973 was Frithiof Aamodt the only influential borzoi breeder in Norway. During the period 1950 to 1971 he participated in shows and was awarded Hounors and Prices. In 1970, another Swedish Borzoi was imported to the\u00a0 Frimodt\u2019s kennel,\u00a0Markants Anna Karenina<\/a>.\u00a0 She had two litters mated to\u00a0Frimodt\u2019s Nicolay Romanoff<\/a>\u00a0in 1972 & -74. Fritiof Aamodt generally kept the bitches for himself and sold the males.\u00a0Laila Kr\u00f8t\u00f8e<\/a>\u00a0and her family visited him, when they were about to start with borzoi and wrote this:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe found him a warm, gentle, pleasant and sympathetic person. He kept his borzoi with dignity and gentleness and treated the bitches like princesses. He told us to always behave with respect towards the breed. He died in 1978 and is remembered in Norway as \u201cThe Great One\u201d, who formed the basis for our present Borzoi quality\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wenche and Kaare Stray<\/a>\u00a0first Borzoi was Ch\u00a0Frimodt\u2019s Nikolai Romanoff.<\/a>\u00a0He was bred twice to their Finnish import\u00a0Hlamida of Golden West<\/a>. From this combination came\u00a0N Ch Wenwil\u2019s Vladimir Gladiwhisky<\/a>. He was bred back to his dam Hlamida and produced N S Ch\u00a0Wenwil\u2019s Eroschina Tsygankov.<\/a>\u00a0 She became foundation for kennel\u00a0Sirioschka<\/a>. Gladiwhisky also were used at kennel Al Wintar to produce the very influential Ch\u00a0Al-Wintar\u2019s Mirjoz Vlademir<\/a>. Wenwil did not continue breeding after that.<\/p>\n

Mrs Anne Karin Olsen(Kost\u00f6l)<\/a>\u00a0from Kristiansand had her first borzoi,\u00a0Tzars Anastasia<\/a>\u00a0imported from\u00a0Monika Wall<\/a>\u00a0in Sweden. Later she imported N S Ch Don Cosacken\u2019s Aramis<\/a>\u00a0from Sonja Olesen and Gunnar Larsson in Sweden. Anastasia was first bred to Aramis, giving\u00a0Ch Russkaja Alexandra<\/a>. Later to UK & S Ch\u00a0Deanlands Boris.<\/a>\u00a0From this combination came\u00a0Russkaja\u2019s Boris Bazarov<\/a>\u00a0,who became Top Borzoi in Norway in 1977. Mrs Olsen-Kost\u00f6l later imported\u00a0N Ch Rodgivad Raindance<\/a>r<\/a>\u00a0from England and used him on Anastasia. Unfortunately, there are no dogs left from these breedings. Russkaja bred one more litter using\u00a0Charadei (Murugi)<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0but none from this litter went on. The kennel later moved on to other breeds.<\/p>\n

Arne Strand in Kristiansand only had one litter and did not use a kennel name. He imported the bitch\u00a0Murugi\u2019s Tatiana Zerowitj<\/a>\u00a0from Sweden and bred her to UK & S Ch\u00a0Deanlands Boris<\/a>. From this litter two of the puppies together with their mother went back to the\u00a0Murugi<\/a>\u00a0kennels in Sweden as the Strands did not have the necessary time for a houseful of dogs. Both puppies became Champions, but unfortunately,\u00a0Boris Katja<\/a>\u00a0didn\u2019t produce, while\u00a0Marsja<\/a>,\u00a0 BIS at a National Speciality, was bred from and can still be found in pedigrees.<\/p>\n

It is worth to notice that during the same time, his half-brother Int Ch\u00a0Don Cosacken\u2019s Artjenko<\/a>\u00a0was the top winner in Sweden. They also imported Ch DonCosackens Gizjiga Artjenkova, but unfortunately, neither of the two were bred from.<\/p>\n

Later the Krotoes imported\u00a0Ermolaij Fedra Ferim<\/a>\u00a0as foundation for their kennel. They also bought\u00a0Nord Ch Don Cosackens Nurejev<\/a>\u00a0who came to have great influence on the breed through his son\u00a0Int Ch Al Wintar\u2019s United Astrachan.<\/a><\/p>\n

Fedra was bred to Nurejev and produced several champions,\u00a0Int Ch Zhivago\u2019s Athene.<\/a>stayed in the kennel and was used for the B-litter with\u00a0Tovarisjtj\u2019s Jewel<\/a>\u00a0For the C.litter Fedra Ferim was mated with\u00a0Tovarisjtj\u2019s Jewel<\/a>\u00a0to produce two Ch-s. The beautiful\u00a0Ch\u00a0Zhivago\u2019s Czardas\u00a0<\/a>did some very nice winning for his owner and Zhivago\u2019s. For the Zhivago\u2019s final, the E-litter, Athene was bred to\u00a0Murugis Baraban<\/a>, none from this litter bred on.<\/p>\n

Moonhill\u2019s<\/a><\/h3>\n

She was litter sister to\u00a0Anastasia<\/a>, the foundation for the\u00a0Tovarisjtj\u2019s kennel<\/a>\u00a0in Sweden and bred by\u00a0Barbro B\u00e4ckstr\u00f6m<\/a>. Akita was mated to\u00a0Ilja of Golden West\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0for her first litter in 1974. From that litter\u00a0Aleksei av Borodino<\/a>\u00a0was top winning borzoi in Norway in 1976 (?), and also Anastasia av Borodino got her Ch-title. A repeat breeding was done in 1975.<\/p>\n

Anne Lise Wintar<\/a>\u00a0started her kennel Al Wintar\u2019s in the early 70s with Afghans. A few years later she \u201cdiscovered\u201d\u00a0 Borzoi and imported\u00a0Marushka of Golden West<\/a>. Marushka was born in 1974 and became her first brood bitch. Through excellent combinations and a large production kennel Al Wintar dominated the breed in Norway for a very long time. Her first big winner, born 1977, was\u00a0Ch Al<\/a>\u00a0Wintar\u2019s Mirjoz Vlademir<\/a>, who is\u00a0<\/span>from 3\/4 Finnish and 1\/4 Norwegian breeding. A litter sister,\u00a0Al Wintars Maruska<\/a>\u00a0was BIS at the National 1986 For her next litter, in 1978, she used Mirjoz to another bitch from Finland,\u00a0Okarina of Golden West<\/a>\u00a0. This breeding gave Nord Ch\u00a0Al Wintars Nikita<\/a>\u00a0& Ch\u00a0Ni-Ni Nobless<\/a>, BIS at the first Norwegian National Speciality. This breeding was repeated in 1979. In 1981 the English import\u00a0Ch Francehill Oliver<\/a>\u00a0was used for a litter of 8, giving among else Ch\u00a0Al Wintar\u2019s Sarozza<\/a>, owned by\u00a0Eli Klepp (Forseth)\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

In 1984 Al Wintars used their Swedish import Ch\u00a0Za-Wado\u2019s Tzarkow<\/a>\u00a0to mate Ch Al Wintars NiNI Nobless, producing Nord Ch\u00a0Al Wintar\u2019s Votka.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

One from this litter,\u00a0Ch Ermolaij\u2019s Fedra Ferim<\/a>\u00a0came to Laila Kr\u00f6t\u00f6es kennel Zhivago.\u00a0 A sister of Stanislaw,\u00a0Rancho Divinity\u2019s Selova<\/a>, was sold to kennel\u00a0LeiCro<\/a>\u00a0in Sweden were she had a litter.<\/p>\n

Marit Gr\u00f8nli of Rancho Divinity married Sture Henriksen, and the two of them started the kennel\u00a0Romani.<\/a>\u00a0They had bought\u00a0Zhivago\u2019s Arijana<\/a>\u00a0and bred her to\u00a0Ch Kazar\u2019s Farkai,<\/a>\u00a0producing their first Ch,\u00a0\u00a0Romani\u2019s Astrea<\/a>. For the kennels B-litter, Astrea was mated to\u00a0Tovarisjtj\u2019s Iaroslav<\/a>, which produced one Ch,\u00a0Romani\u2019s Busy Bee<\/a>. For the D-litter\u00a0Al Wintars Zany<\/a>\u00a0was mated with\u00a0Kazar Farkai,<\/a>\u00a0which gave\u00a0Int Ch Romanis Dear Darling<\/a>. Romanis final litter in 1993 gave two Ch-s,\u00a0Romanis Zakopane<\/a>\u00a0& Zoft Velvet.<\/p>\n

Lanovia<\/a><\/h3>\n

Grete Gillebo Laengen<\/a>\u00a0had a borzoi from\u00a0 Frimodt kennel last litter,Frimodt\u2019s Boris Nikolaivitsj,<\/a>\u00a0born in 1974. Mrs Laengen later imported\u00a0\u00a0Ch Olagu\u2019s Orskatja<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0 Beatrice Jahrl in Sweden and also\u00a0Danubia\u2019s Alexander Marmic<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0 USA. These two were bred twice and produced\u00a0Lanovia\u2019s Waslav Nijinskij<\/span>\u00a0in the first litter 1980.\u00a0Ch Lanovia\u2019s Vitalij Voroshilov<\/a>\u00a0 was born in the second, !982. He became used, twice by kennel\u00a0Rosenhill<\/a>, and also one litter in Finnish kennel Sinaidan.<\/p>\n

Later\u00a0Majenkir Sirioschka Gesso<\/a>\u00a0was imported from USA. In the third litter came three Ch-s. All three were used in their home kennel. Av Fjascho had continued success, combining their line with both outcrosses to US and Swedish lines as well as linebreeding back to the original Kazar blood. Examples of this are Ch Fjora av Fjascho, Int Ch Gordienko av Fjascho and Nord Ch\u00a0Lesta av Fjascho. Bjarte Lien continued his breeding until 2012, when the last? Fjascho-litter was born. Only one puppy, Australian export Ch Angara av Fjascho.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tzartaig<\/a><\/h3>\n

Gerd Torkildsrud<\/a>\u00a0got her first borzoi in 1983 and have since kept a small number of Borzois as family members. The first\u00a0 bitch was bought\u00a0 from\u00a0Fiva\u2019s kennel<\/a>. Her name was\u00a0Ch Fiva\u2019s Fusenka<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Ch Za Wado\u2019s Tzarklov<\/a>\u00a0out of\u00a0Al Wintar\u2019s Sahri<\/a>.\u00a0In 1986 it was time to mate Fusjenka and after examining available studs,\u00a0Int Ch Yablonaja Boleck<\/a>\u00a0was chosen. The mating resulted in two girls and three boys. They all did very well with several champion-titles, and one,\u00a0Tzartaig Tzar Pazijc<\/a>\u00a0was exported to the\u00a0Kostenov<\/a>\u00a0kennel in the USA. Also\u00a0Int Ch Tzartaig Tbelizi L\u2019vova<\/a>\u00a0was used in breeding.<\/p>\n

In this litter\u00a0 four become Champions. L\u2019Vova had two more litters at two different Norwegian kennels\u00a0 She also had a great show career and lived to be 13 years old.<\/p>\n

Instead, Tzartaigs had a litter in 2010, when Bistraya Bri av Adelrose was bred to Khanzade\u2019s Cool Remembrance, only two puppies, one of them,\u00a0\u00a0Tzartaig Cool Victory<\/a>\u00a0became Int Ch, he was used for three litters, two in Norway and one in Sweden. At about the same time,\u00a0Nordic Ch Amuri-Paikos Gorka<\/a>\u00a0was imported from Hungary. She left no progeny.<\/p>\n

Then, in 1996, two littermates were imported from US Majenkir kennel. Nord Ch\u00a0Majenkir Tzigan at Le Sphinx<\/a>\u00a0&\u00a0\u00a0Ch Majenkir Tzarina Le Sphinx.<\/a>\u00a0Tzigan was used for the kennels E-litter, producing 3 Ch-s, Le Sphinx Embla was one of them. Tzigan also sired a litter at kennel Rosco\u2019s.\u00a0 Tzarina had two litters. In her first, 2001, the very influential French export\u00a0Int Ch Le Sphinx Fenix du Grand Fresnoy<\/a>\u00a0was born. He sired 11 litters, most of them for Grand Fresnoy, but also one for Czech kennel Bistkupstwo. Fenix sister Ch\u00a0Le Sphinx Filippiia<\/span>\u00a0bred two litters for Le Sphinx. The kennel has also hereafter bred many influential Borzois, via exports and imports around the world. To be mentioned is\u00a0Ch Le Sphinx Killing Me Softly<\/a>, siring four litters on the European continent. Seems Le Sphinx is still active, with a litter in 2021.<\/p>\n
